2026 Hailed as the Year of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Given that a gathering of frogs is called an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.

A Legacy of Leaping

Frogs are not at all new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. However, their visibility has noticeably increased in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are bona fide Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To quantify this phenomenon, I performed a detailed review into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a steady rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's rising status in the public consciousness is partially evident elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the explosion in gaming seems uniquely pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs have inherent creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and grappling abilities enable a host of innovative control schemes.

Several the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be on the verge of a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
