Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
